Allowance basics

How much, how often and what it's for.

5 min read

An allowance gives kids regular practice with money. There's no single right amount; what matters is being consistent and clear.

Decide together

  • How much: one common rule of thumb is $1 a week per year of age; adjust to your budget
  • How often: weekly is easiest for younger kids
  • What it covers: snacks, toys, apps or outings they choose
  • How it's split: save, spend and share

Be consistent

Pay on the same day every week. Avoid extra money when the allowance runs out; the lesson is in running out.
