Young children can start learning about money long before they can count it. Keep lessons short, playful and tied to real life.
Ideas for ages 3 to 5
- Sort coins by size and color, then learn their names
- Let them hand money to a cashier and wait for change
- Talk out loud about choices: "We need milk; we want cookies"
- Read picture books where characters save or share
Ages 6 and 7
- Count coins up to a dollar
- Let them choose between two small treats with a set amount
- Explain that cards and phones spend real money too
